At age 22, Charlie Walker left home in search of adventure. Fleeing the boredom that comes with comfort, he set off on a secondhand bicycle. The aim was simple to pedal to the furthest point in each of Europe, Asia, and Africa. He didn't train or plan. He just started. The journey was an escape from an unremarkable existence, a pursuit of hardship, and a chance to shed the complacency of middle England. From the brutality of winter on the Tibetan plateau, to the claustrophobia of the Southeast Asian jungle, the quest provided Charlie with ample opportunity to test his mettle. Ultimately, though, the toughest challenge was entirely unforeseen.

"I thoroughly enjoyed living through Charlie's writing in this book, the determination and intrepidity is inspiring, especially due to the fact I'll be leaving to cycle the world myself in a few months. His tales only strengthen the lust for travel, to explore the unknown, and to face your limits. If you don't already have that in you, I promise that this book will draw it out. Thank you Charlie for the awesome read, keep adventuring!"

Through Sand Snow A Man a Bicycle and a 43000Mile Journey to Adulthood via the Ends of the Earth Audible Audio Edition Charlie Walker Books Reviews

  • Charlie Walker’s Through Sand & Snow is an account of a young man journeying 13,000+ miles in 26 countries by bike. Walker pedaled through three deserts and across seven mountain ranges, endured extremes of hot and cold, and patched 50 bike tire punctures.

His skillful writing style depicted well a range of experiences, encounters, and emotions. He recounted his gratitude from simple kindnesses “helping a traveller in need,” to acts by others that may well have saved his life, to the despair of loneliness, to quirky moments of “cheerful, wordless conversation,” to laughing outright at the absurdity of events, and so on.

One might wonder how Walker could ultimately cover so many miles. He commented it came down to watching the sun set, only to see it rise again; all the while going by bike, “. . . a little distance each day." Then reaching his destination became possible.

Through Sand & Snow is just one stage of Walker’s other varied and challenging adventures that would follow. I hope those will be part of yet another book waiting to be penned by Walker. Meanwhile, now the wiser from self-propelled travel, Walker concurred with Tim Cahill, “A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” ##
  • Charlie was brutally honest throughout this read; he amalgamated emotion and physical status through a wonderful collage of scenery and human encounters. The reader undoubtedly feels what he felt from the elation of "I am really in this and can do this" to utter heartbreak from the one who got away. This was a real page turner rich in details about cycling aspects--miles, repairs, caloric demands. It was also richly suffused with a humanistic, relatable aspect of encounters, ephemeral friendships, loves, loss and raw emotion. I look forward to Charlie's next great work.
  • Great adventure. Extremely well written. Drew reader into the trip.
  • I was very excited through the first couple of chapters. Young guy embarking on an epic journey with a great, open mindset. Eloquent prose. Is rightfully annoyed with all the things travelers associate with obnoxious white tourists until... he becomes one himself. As soon as he hits SE Asia, the writer just turns into a boozing, entitled, womanizing tourist himself. He should have just called it a day after the Tibetan family saved his sorry ass when he almost died from exposure. Charlie Walker is a very gifted writer, has a great voice/accent, but the story line is one of the most disappointing ones I've ever listened to. I'd say sober up, get a new bike, and try again.

  • A truly amazing adventurer. Each page tells of his determination, hardships, friendships, stubbornness, loneliness and enjoyment and appreciation of nature. A great read.
  • Just when you think you've read them all up comes another outstanding and beautifully written adventure that gives you faith in humanity. Well done traveler!!
  • Excellent, gritty travel at its humid best. Genuinely one of only a few books I was sad to finish.
