- I am a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and have been a professional chef for almost 30 years, working for high-level private clients. I love "little cookbooks" and was curious about this one. It turned out to be not only a great cook book, but one that reads like a novel. It is interesting, funny, and the recipes are spot on. The spirit, which is a combination of culinary heresy and determination, is a reflection of the way cooking should be tackled bravely and with love love. Recipes that are worked out through imagination and willingness to fail are always the best. Jump in and make some soda bread.
Note I read every cookbook like a novel before using a single recipe. This is a short story, and you can be baking in no time. - This cookbook is the answer to the prayers of many who love bread, but cannot tolerate yeast! Shelly K. Weathers is a gifted writer and her humor comes shining through in this detailed how to and "what not to do" with the variety of 20 recipes that keep us from having to say "ho hum, soda bread again?" These great adaptations from the standard are "family approved" and simple to make following her directions. Well written, funny at times, and straight from the heart. Thank you Shelly, for taking the "boring" out of the only type of bread I can eat. Those sweet ones are habit forming!!!
- This is my favorite kind of recipe book. It begins Joy of Cooking style, with the basic structure, and explains why that's boring and flavorless. Then the recipes begin, and it's a field of soda bread dreams. The recipes appear written the way I cook, too, which is to say un-scientifically? This weekend I'm going to try one of the sriracha recipes because I love that little zing in bread and I know it's going to be delightful. I wish it were 40 recipes, but 20 will keep me busy.
- Not what I was hoping for.
- Great book! My husband is allergic to yeast and misses bread. I tried a variety of soda bread/yeast free bread recipes from different sources which my husband tended to think were 'OK, but.. lacking something'.
Possibly the best way to review this book is photographically. Whilst I don't claim to be any sort of brilliant baker, already I've picked up tips and produced some wonderful food with this book.
The pictures arent to say look at the wonderful things you can make - more to say 'I bought this book and it is so good I used it to make this and this and this and then thought about trying to make these from that recipe and - wow they worked! I didn't just read it and think 'Oooh pretty and delicious and then bung it on a shelf'
I remember sharing a flat with a girl many years ago who made her own bread and being very jealous. I never managed to get it right.
I had a trusty bread machine which was the closest I personally came to homemade bread until this book.
