The Experts' Guide to Life at Home edition by Samantha Ettus Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

  • I love the tips in this book! I pick it up and read a chapter whenever the moods strikes. I always learn something helpful from it. Very glad I purchased it.
  • Fantastic coffee table book. Entertaining and good info. Purchase all of the different books by the same author!
  • In creating her "Experts' Guides" ("The Experts' Guide to 100 Things Everyone Should Know How to Do") Ettus collects 100 practical mini-essays from leading professionals, ranging from Chef Daniel Boulud on sharpening your kitchen knives to Senator Dianne Feinstein on preventing identity theft, William D. Novelli, CEO of AARP, on caring for an elderly relative, and Heloise on controlling dust.

The essays are grouped around six household themes and cover a wide range of useful tips. "To Nest" includes advice on budgets, filing taxes, securing a mortgage, building a snowman (from Jim Sysko who built the world's tallest snowman in Bethel, Maine in 1999), meditating, growing vegetables and more.

"To Protect" covers fire prevention, mold, caring for clothing, sun safety, and indoor air pollution to mention a few and "To Improve" ranges from simple home repairs to folding fitted sheets and keeping your pet clean. "To Beautify" continues the improvement theme with decorating and design tips.

The book then swings back to self-improvement with "To Relate" and such topics as balancing work and family, winning at poker, disciplining kids and forgiving people. In conclusion "To Enjoy" tells how to start a wine cellar, carve a pumpkin, build a tree house and "Lead a Happy Life."

For further information there's a complete list of the experts' websites at the end. While anybody can pick this up and find something they didn't know, it's an especially useful guide for young people just starting out.

  • Want to know how to fold a fitted sheet? This book will tell you!

Each chapter unfolds as a series of mini-essays on the home life by experts, with the COO of a pest control company teaching how to prevent household pests, a field editor for Audubon explaining how to select and use a birdfeeder, Dr. Joy Browne offering suggestions for learning how to compromise, pediatrics professor Harvey Knapp instructing on how to discipline your children, etc. The pieces are compact, and most have at least one "take-away," so it's easy to pick the book up, read for five minutes and glean some useful bit of info. On the downside, a few areas beg for a more in-depth explanation, and the vast array of advice covered means that there are some odd juxtapositions (e.g., "increase your energy" is followed by "secure a mortgage"). Still, few books can manage to instruct readers on selecting window treatments, making time for yourself and hosting a dinner party with such streamlined simplicity.
  • This joins others in the 'Experts' Guide' series, gathering the knowledge of a range of experts to provide insights into the little challenges in life - and it's the first to meld home improvement, interior design and self-help under one cover. Six sections on improving, beautifying, and enjoying the home show how to achieve everything; from the basics of folding a sheet properly to hanging holiday lights and selecting and cleaning countertops. From installing a doggie door to decorating with flowers, enjoy all-inclusive compilation of practical tips which considers no home-related topic too small to address.

  • There are several things I love about this book. While Ms. Ettus surveyed the country for what we want to know about the home, she let the experts write the chapters. The book combines well known celebrity experts like Al Roker, Rachel Ray and Leeza Gibbons, but also has Jim Sysko, the record holder for the largest snowman. Each chapter is short and to the point but very informative and fun. Last but not least, the book combines chapters about how to improve and take care of your home with chapters about how to enjoy life within it. Great book!
  • I loved the first book and was eager to read the more specific content of book two. The information in book two is useful and well-presented. Any questions you've ever had about life at home are answered. In addition, many of the topics will give home dwellers new and creative ideas. I also found it highly interesting to read the blurbs about these well-chosen experts and learn about their backgrounds. This is a great book to read with other people as a conversation piece. Ettus has done it again!!!!
  • Once again this author manages to find 100 things that we all need help with...I am buying them for stocking stuffers and Chanukah gifts for everyone on my list. It's a helpful, enjoyable, easy read that you can pick up and put down 100's of times and has something for everyone.
